Matty Thomas

Instructor

A 2005 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Matty Thomas enters his first full season with NHDP.

Prior to entering the Naval Academy, Coach Thomas attended the legendary St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, where he excelled in both hockey and lacrosse. A four-year letter winner and team Captain at Navy, he led the defense in scoring and plus/minus during his junior and senior seasons. Twice named to the All-ECHA team, he earned an invitation to participate in the USA Hockey World University Games selection camp in 2004.

Upon graduation in 2005, he completed three deployments onboard USS MONTEREY (CG 61) and USS ELROD (FFG 55). In 2009, his naval career brought him back to the DC area, and he rejoined Navy Hockey as their Assistant Coach.  For the past two seasons, Coach Thomas has been responsible for recruiting, video coordination, special-teams strategies, classroom sessions, team-building development, and off-ice conditioning.

In addition to his involvement with NHDP, Coach Thomas has also assisted with the PVAHA USA Hockey Development camps, Navy Youth Hockey program, and Wounded Warrior Project.

Next season he will be joining the University of Denver coaching staff as Volunteer Assistant.
